About Log Cam: RAW 4K Video Camera

Why it exists

Many people recommend log video long before somebody explains it. You read that log video grades better. You find the setting and you record a clip. The result is a flat gray picture that looks worse than your usual video. Many people stop there, and that is a reasonable response. Nothing about that first clip shows an improvement.

This app is for the moment just after that. It treats log recording as the ordinary path, not the advanced one. It also answers the questions that follow a recording. Those questions are where the clip is, and how to move it from the phone. An easy start is not a reason to make a limited app. The developer removed no feature to keep the app simple.

That promise has to be concrete, so here it is. Switch the viewfinder to Look, and the screen shows you a normal picture while the recording stays log. Import your own .cube LUT, and Look shows you the graded picture instead. You can also write that LUT into the clip, and then you do not grade it at all. That write cannot be undone, so it is a setting you turn on deliberately.

The features pages give the details. The app has seven log profiles and records them to ProRes or 10-bit HEVC. It has LUT preview, a histogram, zebras, and false color. It has manual ISO, manual shutter, and manual white balance, with autofocus and tap to focus. It has an in-app gallery for your recordings. It can export to an external SSD, a hard drive, or the Files app.

Who builds it

Mehmet Ali Kısacık works independently from Istanbul, Turkey. There is no team behind this and no company: one developer builds the app, writes these pages, and answers for both. If something on this site is wrong, there is exactly one person to correct it. The contact page is where to start.

What this site will and will not say

Someone confirmed every capability this site names, against the app itself. Where a feature is undecided or unfinished, this site leaves it out. It does not hedge it. That rule was written while the app was still unreleased, when describing what it might do one day would have been easy, and it did not relax when the app shipped.

The reason is not modesty. A camera app that promises more than it delivers loses that argument in its first week of reviews. The promise is the part people quote back. It is better to say less now than to correct it in public later.

Not the app with the similar name

There is another iPhone app called Log Cam: Open Gate by RAW Cam, made by Sebastijan Grabar, who also makes RAW Cam: Open Gate DNG Video. Log Cam: RAW 4K Video Camera is unrelated to both. No shared code, no shared developer, no connection at all beyond a similar name in App Store search.

The clearest way to tell them apart is what each one does after you press stop. Clips in Log Cam: RAW 4K Video Camera go to the app’s own gallery, and export from there to a drive or to the Files app. Log Cam: Open Gate is a specialist tool for people who already shoot log.
